Rhythm ‘n’ Badmind

Who knew that randomly flicking through the music channels on Sky last week would lead to us watching the video above which would lead us to a conversation about all the R&B tunes over the years that have promoted badmind behaviour which would then lead us to dubbing this form of music Rhythm ‘n’ Badmind which would then lead to us putting this all in a post which leads us to this point..

R&B envokes all types of emotions that are easier to express through song and while these next group of songs are dope, it doesn’t take away from the fact that they’re a projection of cold tactics to steal, slander and disrespect. Gotta love it. Here’s a list of the most potent Rhythm ‘n’ Badmind tracks over the last 20 years…

Joe – All The Things (Your Man Won’t Do)

The title says it all..

From ‘I Will Do Anything For Love, But I Won’t Do….’

“This dude was talking about paying a million dollars, giving her pearls and making love on black sand, this is straight badmind behaviour using underhand tactics to score; and this kind of lyrical coaxing of another man’s woman is in about 100 violations of the man code.” – Don Kwelu

Drake – Marvin’s Room

Welcome to the aptly titled ‘Player Hater’s Anthem’, Marvin’s Room is modern day Rhythm ‘n’ Badmind. We all know the story: guy gets drunk off Rose (lightweight), thinks about his girl, decides to call her late, she picks up conveniently when her man’s not around (shameful), guy starts slandering her man and saying she can do better.

Look at his life.

The level of disrespect here is high, yet the worse part of it is that when this track gets played in a club, women sway and sing along like it’s a nursery rhyme. “F*** that N**** that you love so bad/I know you still think about the times we had”. I see y’all, relating to it and what not, behave. Brothers too, I know some are out there thinking “I feel like Drake Knows me”…..riiight….but certain emotions you just don’t release.

Mary J Blige Feat. Lil Kim – I Can Love You Better

Before Mary J Blige was singing about Chicken Wraps for a $2million pay cheque, she used to be upset, we liked MJB when she was upset because she made hits. One of those hits was this track, another legendary Rhythm ‘n’ Badmind, less brutal than Marvin’s room but just as effective. “Who’s gonna make you feel the way I do? Nobody”.

MJB didn’t just say she’d take care of him better but said she throws down better in the sex department. She doesn’t even know how the man’s new girl is in the bedroom but she’s that confident. Add Lil Kim for further emphasis “Playing good Samaritan in the Sheridan” and you have a classic ‘I’m Better Than Her And YOU Know It’ song.

Destiny’s Child – Confessions

“I’m just confessing
About some things I did
I might-as-well come clean
What you feel about that baby?”

This one right here? Messed up. Confessing that you slept with two other dudes and spent his money on clothes and trip outta town JUST because you were pissed is not conducive to stable blood pressure. The audacity to then ask “How do you feel about that?” after the confession is muggage. I pray that none of my readers have gone through this.

Note to Men: Any woman who says this is her favourite Destiny’s Child song, turn around and walk away, don’t look back.

Marsha Ambrosius – I Hope She Cheats On You (With A Basketball Player)

“I Hope She Cheats On You With A Basketball Player/Hope that she Kim Kardashian’d her way up/don’t know the difference between a touch down or a lay up/got you on Viagra in order for you to stay up”

Bitter.com in association with Rhythm ‘n’ Badmind proudly presents…

Eric Roberson – Borrow You

Three rules for a man’s wife when she goes out to a club:

  1. If a guy moves to you, politely decline, keep conversation minimal
  2. Don’t accept any drinks from a random guy
  3. Don’t dance with a guy

Eric Roberson is dope, this track is smooth but hey! It’s still Rhythm ‘n’ Badmind. You can’t borrow a dude’s wife for a song or two so she can act like she’s yours for 10 minutes. As soon as you see that ring on her finger, bounce! Taken women especially those who are married, should not be dancing with next dude’s in a club and if they do there should be a one metre gap between the two and the music must be up tempo, preferably something whack by David Guetta.

Jazmine Sullivan – I’m In Love With Another Man

Deep.

Destiny’s Child – With Me

Here we go again, I’m seeing a regular pattern here with Destiny’s Child. There’s nothing worse than finding out your partner is cheating with someone confident enough to tell you and not care about the consequences.

“I know what you didn’t do
To make him stay
You see a bad performing
Unfulfilling woman
drives a man away”

No Respect!

“Now as far as I know
He’s in good hands
So you can stop callin’ all around
Sayin’ have you seen my man
Ain’t no need to fuss and fight
Tryin’ to make it right
Certain things ain’t meant to be
And that’s why, that’s why he’s right here with me”

None whatsosver.

Rhythm ‘n’ Badmind, its real. I know there’s a few we missed out, so feel free to comment and add some of your own.

    Great post guys!
Seems DC sang about them cheating as much as they sang about being cheated on.
You need to add The Roots- Break you off to this tho’
If she cheated on him, she’s definitely going to cheat on you.

Paha – True stories indeed. Now you guys have me thinking about the badmind content in all the other R& B tunes I have been singing hard to over the years paha. Gotta love it tho..hehehe.

    Enjoyed this read, indeed!! Goodtimes
Ps, Somebody is not impressed with Destiny Child lol.

  5. Brilliant post!
That Jasmine Sullivan song goes in.
I’ve lived that song, but as the man she is talking to…
Even though it’s painful as hell or “badmind”
For some reason, it’s almost like there was a bit more clarity, almost a solace, more of an understanding – more room for forgiveness.
I felt the emotion, and I could feel the emotion of the guy who told me he was in love with another woman.
He’s forgiven. Thanks Jas, thanks BWNG.
